Gleanings from the history of Roma: S.P.Q.R., HISTORY OF ONE ACRONYM

Since the ancient republican age Roma has had in its own banners the acronym S.P.Q.R., displayed in diagonal, preceded by a Greek cross. Well-known, it is the abbreviation of Senatus PopulusQue Romanus, the Senate and the Roman People, the "constitutional" leaders of that time. This the historical truth. A legend, instead, anticipates the acronym to the regal period, related to the Sabini. Later on, the acronym has been always object of various interpretations: many the versions along the time.
